The Trona Pinnacles were a unique geological feature in the California Desert Conservation Area, with over 500 tufa spires reaching up to 140 feet tall. The pinnacles varied in shape, from short and squat to tall and thin, and were mainly made of calcium carbonate (tufa). They’ve appeared in many commercials, films, and photo shoots. In 1968, they were designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior to protect this remarkable formation.
A Basecamp was set up in a dispersed camping area, where there were fire rings. Participants were reminded to “Pack it in and Pack it out.” Facilities were limited to a pit toilet near the western end, and there was no water or waste service. Trail closure and rehabilitation signs were in place to protect the area, and three bars of LTE service were available. Sounds of nearby mining activities could be heard.
Day Activities:
4×4 Trona Pinnacles Scenic Tour:
A 4×4 was recommended for this trail through the Trona Pinnacles, with a mix of hard-packed terrain, rocky sections, and sandy wash crossings. There were also side trails and loops to explore.
Searles Valley Mineral Operations Tour:
On this 5.5-mile trail, participants encountered sand, rocks, steep sections, and rutted paths. It passed through BLM land and briefly through the Naval Weapons Area. Watch for warning signs if you stray from the trail. The area offered wildflower super blooms in spring.
Fish Head Rocks to Trona Pinnacles Tour:
The Fish Head Rocks, painted in the late 1930s, were a favorite desert sight. The route passed through “Poison Canyon,” where a stream contains toxic minerals. The landscape included sand washes and dry lakebeds, which could fill with water at times. This easy scenic route led to the Trona Pinnacles, a National Natural Landmark.
